You may know that Graem Whyte has been curating his THIS WEEK IN ART artshows at the MOTOR CITY BREWERY every Wednesday nite for several years. Each week a single artist installs an artshow in the intimate space inside Detroit's coolest brewery. On March 19, 2008 it's time for DAVIN BRAINARD to show some new work and have some fun at MCBW!!! The artwork will be CHEAP because Davin wants to make it available to the kids. Thes artwork will not be available online because this show for LOCALS ONLY!!! Sorry!!! HIS NAME IS ALIVE new new york residency feb 24, 25, and 27!!! Its called COME TO THE FRONT and features three performances. Last year's COME OUT THE WILDERNESS Peace Conference was so successful we decided to make it an annual event!!! Day three will be a free electric kalimba art show Installation Exhibition at SoundFix in Brooklyn from 7-10. Admission is totally free. Don't pay the guy at the door. Just walk right in. A hundred (or 20) electric kalimbas will be on display and plugged into really loud amplifiers and you find the one you like and play it with your thumbs really loud. If you really like it you can buy it because they're for sale, too!!!!

SELECTED NEW WORKS presents artwork by Mike Connelly, Tara Connelly, Heath Moerland, John Olson, Nate Young and Alivia Zivich. January 12-February 9, 2008. UFO Factory, 1345 Division Suite 101, Detroit, MI 48207.
Noise, music, tape trades, independent labels, record cutting, hand made editions, collaboration. These are the everyday medium of the artists involved in this exhibition. Long past simple two-dimensional works, their dissemination methods become intrinsic to their art. Removing themselves from the four-wall confines of the gallery they utilize live performances, internet byways and their homes for the transference of expression. However, this exhibition focuses on the visual aspect of these practices. Here we pull together this creative phenomenon in its elemental form, removed from the invisible trade routes of their labels (American Tapes, Gods of Tundra, Fag Tapes, AA Records).
The seed of an edition is an individual work. While many of these artists are better known for their multiples, at the root is often an singular artwork. On display here are the paintings, collages, drawings and videos that are later replicated like a virus, infecting the international world of underground culture. Undoubtedly the works of the artists involved have influenced the popularity of creative self-proliferation and post-industrial production.
Since the 1970s oil crisis, Michigan has been in a state of economic down-spiral. These artists have grown from and subsequently out of the burnt-out husks of the industrial era. The new form of local economics embraced by them goes beyond do-it-yourself capitalism arriving at do-it-yourself-then-together, reaching out past Midwest America to the like-minded parties around the world. Come take part in this local exhibition of international artists. In addition to works of a static nature there will be live events each weekend of the show's run, culminating in a performance by Wolf Eyes at the closing on February 9.

Whether you dress up as a Dracula, a Frankenstein or a Wolfman FAKE BLOOD is essential to the success of your costume. Even a regular, everyday outfit can be converted into a Halloween costume by simply adding some FAKE BLOOD!!! Saturday September 15, 2007 at UFO FACTORY---BLACK & BLACK---all black artwork by 12 artists from Detroit, New York and Rotterdam. Completely black artworks, including painting, photography, sculpture and mixed media. All work was made specifically for this exhibition.
There are several schools of thought regarding black. Is it a really a color? Or is it absence of color? Is it every color? Is it happy or sad? Is it good or bad? What does science say? Is it spiritual? Here at UFO FACTORY we are not interested in asking these questions and that's not why we curated this artshow. We put this show together because black stuff is cool. Then we asked a bunch of our friends to create some all black artwork. The show is called BLACK & BLACK.

Scott Hocking is having an artshow at Susanne Hilberry Gallery so he asked all of his friends to help! Scott made a bunch of animal sculptures and he had a bunch of his pals paint them up (like those dorky public art projects). The thing is that all of Scott's animals were being abused by humans (just like they are abused in real-life). Featuring collaborators Davin Brainard, Jim Storm, Clinton Snider, Jeff Karolski and a bunch more. Davin made a BEAVER SUNDAE and it's really great!!! Some of this year's tour specials will include sing-alongs, storytelling, cloud amps, the "HNIA-POD," an i-pod that contains over one thousand HNIA songs (every LP, CD, CDR, TAPE, EP, 7", and compilation track), and home-made electric thumb pianos.
Previous tour highlights have included a giant robot, a rhino, and a cardboard whale that thought he was Iggy Pop!!! Some rare HNIA spottings have been at a festival for contemporary composers in Mexico (that was a mistake!!!), London's famed ICA (we didn't exactly pull a throbbing gristle), a 500yr old buddhist temple in Osaka (the monk was cool!!!), and most recently at cuban restaurant at SXSW!!!

LIVONIA STRINGS contains tracks from their debut album "Livonia," (4AD 1990), re-did with a quartet of strings, finally restoring long lost original arrangements. "I read interviews with Prince and Axl Rose, where they both said they had re-recorded all their old songs, although for different reasons. I decided to do the same. Its sorta like 'LIVONIA episode one - the prequel', says HNIA band leader Warn Defever.
Available only at the SILVER MOUNTAIN STORE, this album was previously available in the ultra limited CLOUD BOX (under the name MYSTERY SPOT, last year. These songs were actually re-recorded before in 2001 while under contract with 4ad, and have now been re-did once again.
This mysterious album by an equally mysterious band was first released in London in 1990 and it combined the ethereality of COCTEAU TWINS and dreamy aesthetics of THIS MORTAL COIL with homemade American primitiveness and a rawness that was lacking elsewhere in music. The British music press freaked out and the record became emblematic of the most fertile period in 4AD history. The truth of the matter however was that half the songs had been written when Warn Defever was still a high school student and not having the resources to properly record a string quartet, he substituted loops and samples on a cassette 4-track and also added vocals. These minimalist compositions, performed as they were originally intended, delicately develop
and gently unfold - slowly revealing the true beauty of Livonia.

On Wednesday June 8 2005 at Stormy Records in Dearborn, NYC's finest IDA will perform songs from their new album, HEART LIKE A RIVER (polyvinyl records). This slo-core, quiet-core, drone-core, folk-core, half-acoustic quintet has been on tour all year and features four young ladies and one boy. The band's latest album is filled with Neil Young styled blues (recorded on a beach!!!) and harmonium drones taken right out of the La Monte Young songbook. Side one of their latest release was actually recorded in 1971 and side two was recorded on the side of a mountain in the Himalayas!!! Also appearing at this "all-ages welcomed" concert will be LITTLE CLAW, a band originally conceived as a sort of Piranhas side project by Jamie Easter, but due to overwhelming response from the Detroit freak scene and beyond, Little Claw quickly became a full-time responsibility for vocalist/guitarist KILYNN, who for this special performance will play "mostly acoustic". The newly released Little Claw full-length LP on Fred Thomas's Ypsilanti Records imprint will be available at this show too!!!!

Originally began as a collection of all the CONTROL PANEL tracks from various 12"'s and compilations, this album took a strange turn and soon became a sort of tone poem beginning with a CIVIL WAR XMAS, "tracing my families roots through the last a hundred years, passing through techno, and ending up at Windy and Carl's house." This album was completed in 2001 but contractual problems have delayed its release until now. It features beeps, blips, beats, strings, piano, and some vocals by the lovely Miss Erika Hoffmann. This

the Canterbury House in Ann Arbor also featuring special guest NIKO!!! Faruq has been performing free jazz, improvised music and more for 35 years (Warn was born 35 years ago). Faruq's old band GRIOT GALAXY wore silver make-up (as a member of the WOLFMAN BAND, Warn wears a wolfman mask and gloves). Faruq had a radio show on WDET (Warn is a frequent guest on WDET). Griot Galaxy was a collective with a frequently changing lineup (His Name is Alive has had over 150 members)!!! There are so many similarities between these two artists, its a wonder they haven't collaborated sooner!!!

You missed it!!!! Since 1995's THE WHALE THAT BECAME A STAR the TIME STEREO group of artists have been making short films (along with all the usual CD's, visual-art and "performance"). Then, in 1998 they decided to hold UNDERGROUND CULT MOVIE NITE so all the kids could watch all the movies that they made!!! An almost-annual tradition was born, so last year UNDERGROUND CULT FILM NITE was held at CPOP GALLERY in Detroit and Galerie de l'ESBAM in Marseille, France. We wanted to try something new this year so we'll pop the popcorn, dim the lights, and show our movies at the new 555 GALLERY in Detroit!!! They have the biggest walls and nicest chairs in town!!! From tiny paper & clay animation to live action drama, from nature studies to social experimentation, shadow-puppets, found footage & more, these movies are funny, strange, beautiful and cool. His Name is Alive presented THE MUSIC OF MARION BROWN, Saturday November 20th at the UMMA in Ann Arbor!!! HNIA honored the music of Marion Brown (1935 - ), saxophonist and composer and one of the great innovators of New Music. His body of work includes Geechee Recollections--a blending of childhood experiences in Georgia with traditional Gullah culture--to Bismallahi, a lyrical performance with composer Harold Budd, produced by Brian Eno. Although Brown appeared on John Coltrane's Ascension album, performed alongside Sun Ra, Pharoah Sanders, and Archie Shepp and recorded his albums for IMPULSE!, ECM, Black Lion, and ESP, he remains largely an unsung hero of improvised music and avant-garde jazz.

NOTES: Nepal is a super small third world country located
deep in the Himalayas, nestled between Tibet and India.
Extreme poverty allows poor health conditions resulting in
a greater incidence of deafness in children from basic
childhood illnesses. In a major city like KATHMANDU, there
are a few sign language schools but in the countryside, isolated
deaf children are still language-less. Four years of fighting-off attacks
from maoist rebels have left the already-limited government resources
depleted. This concert will help fund the construction of a school in
Sindhuli which is in the middle hills of the Eastern half of the country.

Hey everybody!!! On Friday July 23rd, radio station WRSU 88.7 had a crazy seven hour ALL HIS NAME IS ALIVE MARATHON!!!! The station is part of RUTGERS COLLEGE but you didn't have to live in New Jersey to listen, you just had to go to their fancy website and press some buttons and figure it out (you're pretty smart)!!!! The show started at 2 am (thursday night really) and featured some super super rare HNIA recordings that we sent over there for this SPECIAL OCCASION!!! Thanks Paul!!!!
After 5 years away, Japan's GOVERNMENT ALPHA is finally coming back to Detroit!!! Remember that hard driving noise from "Robo Alpha" at Alvin's in 1999??? FANCY SOUND ART INSTALLATION
From May 7 through May 31, THE DETROIT ARTISTS MARKET is exhibiting a sound-only art show called "Sacred and Profane." Curated by Liz Copeland and Clark Warner, this unique exhibit features sound artists (Warn Defever, Richie Hawtin, Thurston Moore, Roedelius and more) who will present unreleased work created specifically for this show. DAM will host an opening reception on Friday, May 7 from 7:30-11 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
DAM will produce a limited edition CD of the work presented in Sacred and Profane, and proceeds will benefit the Detroit Artists Market.

You missed it!!! Robn from the northwest of the usa won a copy of the new ANGEL HALL cd featuring IDA, HNIA, LOW, and SECRET STARS!!! His Name is Alive, Low, and the Secret Stars, are all featured on the new IDA album called ANGEL HALL. The album was recorded live in New York City in 1999 and proceeds benefit the SOUTH BROOKLYN LEGAL SERVICES HIV PROJECT. Its a good cause!!!! Starshaped Press designed a beautiful letterpressed sleeve and the album contains the complete IDA set, two songs each from LOW and HNIA, and three songs from the SECRET STARS. It sounds great!!!!
