RAZZLE DAZZLE ICECREAM & SPACE

March 24-April 7, 2006 at the PURE DETROIT DESIGN LAB: "Razzle Dazzle Icecream and Space" artshow by Davin Brainard.

Davin just loves ICE CREAM, CAMOUFLAGE and SPACE, so he put them all together for his upcoming artshow!!!

But those black and white stripes aren't CAMOUFLAGE. And what is RAZZLE DAZZLE???

RAZZLE DAZZLE is a camouflage technique used on ships during mainly during WORLD WAR 1 (or THE GREAT WAR) and a little bit during WORLD WAR 2. Influenced by cubist painting and Picasso's famous STRIPED SHIRT, the stripes made it difficult for the enemy (those Germans in their U-BOATS) to tell which direction the ship was traveling. This made it much harder to hit with a torpedo. There's more information HERE and HERE.

There's also a monster that ULTRAMAN fought in 1967 called DADA.

DADA seems to reference PHOTOS of the ships rather than the ships themselves. You see, the dazzle ships were usually painted in colorful patterns, but they appear to be black & white patterns because they were captured with the black & white photography of the day.

Here's some color sketches of the British S.S. WAR PENGUIN.

There's a band from Chicago/SF called POD BLOTZ that just love Razzle Dazzle patterns and cheap electronics.

When they played in Detroit in 2004 Davin B. made the poster!

There's some new SPACE paintings too. Davin made these to help sell copies of his new book SPACE.

These paintings are all 12" X 12", call PURE DETROIT DESIGN LAB if you want to buy one!!!

This is what the show looks like.

Here's a meltey cube of razzle dazzle icecream.

There are some handmade b&w posters available too. 12" X 12", $7.00 each, free shipping in USA, limited availability. The design we send is our choice only but we promise to send a good one!!!

Here's one of the sketches.
